MESSAGGIO DEL SANTO PADRE IN OCCASIONE DELL’APERTURA DEL CONGRESSO DEI LAICI CATTOLICI DELL’ASIA (SEOUL, COREA DEL SUD, 31 AGOSTO-5 SETTEMBRE 2010)
Dal 31 agosto al 5 settembre 2010 si svolge presso la Cattedrale di Seoul (Corea del Sud), un Congresso per i laici cattolici in Asia, promosso dal Pontificio Consiglio per i Laici, con la collaborazione della Commissione per il Laicato della Conferenza episcopale coreana e il locale Consiglio nazionale dei laici, sul tema: "Proclamare Gesù Cristo nell’Asia di oggi".
Pubblichiamo di seguito il Messaggio che il Santo Padre Benedetto XVI ha inviato al Presidente del Pontificio Consiglio per i Laici, l’Em.mo Card. Stanisław Ryłko, in occasione dell’apertura dei lavori del Congresso:
MESSAGGIO DEL SANTO PADRE

I was pleased to learn that the Congress of Asian Catholic Laity will be held in Seoul from 31 August to 5 September 2010. I ask you kindly to convey my cordial greetings and prayerful good wishes to the Bishops, priests, religious and lay faithful from Asia assembled for this significant pastoral initiative promoted by the Pontifical Council for the Laity. The theme chosen for the Congress – Proclaiming Jesus Christ in Asia Today – is most timely, and I am confident that it will encourage and guide the lay faithful of the continent in bearing joyful witness to the Risen Lord and to the life-giving truth of his holy word.
Asia, home to two-thirds of the world’s people, the cradle of great religions and spiritual traditions, and the birthplace of diverse cultures, is currently undergoing unprecedented processes of economic growth and social transformation. Asia’s Catholics are called to be a sign and promise of that unity and communion – communion with God and among men – which the whole human family is meant to enjoy and which Christ alone makes possible. As part of the mosaic of the continent’s different peoples, cultures and religions, they have been entrusted with a great mission: that of bearing witness to Jesus Christ, the universal Savior of mankind. This is the supreme service and the greatest gift that the Church can offer to the people of Asia, and it is my hope that the present Conference will provide renewed encouragement and direction in taking up this sacred mandate.
"The peoples of Asia need Jesus Christ and his Gospel. Asia is thirsting for the living water that Jesus alone can give" (Ecclesia in Asia, 50). These prophetic words of the Servant of God John Paul II still resound as a summons addressed to each member of the Church in Asia. If the lay faithful are to take up this mission, they need to become ever more conscious of the grace of their Baptism and the dignity which is theirs as sons and daughters of God the Father, sharers in the death and resurrection of Jesus his Son, and anointed by the Holy Spirit as members of Christ’s mystical Body which is the Church. In union of mind and heart with their Pastors, and accompanied at every step of their journey of faith by a sound spiritual and catechetical formation, they need to be encouraged to cooperate actively not only in building up their local Christian communities but also in making new pathways for the Gospel in every sector of society. Vast horizons of mission are now opening up before the lay men and women of Asia in their efforts to bear witness to the truth of the Gospel; I think especially of the opportunities offered by their example of Christian married love and family life, their defense of God’s gift of life from conception to natural death, their loving concern for the poor and the oppressed, their willingness to forgive their enemies and persecutors, their example of justice, truthfulness and solidarity in the workplace, and their presence in public life.
The increasing numbers of committed, trained and enthusiastic lay persons is thus a sign of immense hope for the future of the Church in Asia. Here I wish to single out with gratitude the outstanding work of the many catechists who bring the riches of the Catholic faith to young and old alike, drawing individuals, families and parish communities to an ever deeper encounter with the Risen Lord. The apostolic and charismatic movements are also a special gift of the Spirit, since they bring new life and vigor to the formation of the laity, particularly families and young people. The associations and ecclesial movements devoted to the promotion of human dignity and justice concretely demonstrate the universality of the Gospel message of our adoption as children of God. Along with the many individuals and groups committed to prayer and works of charity, as well as the contribution made by pastoral and parish councils, these groups play an important role in helping the particular Churches of Asia to be built up in faith and love, strengthened in communion with the universal Church and renewed in zeal for the spread of the Gospel.
For this reason, I pray that the present Congress will highlight the indispensable role of the lay faithful in the Church’s mission and develop specific programs and initiatives to assist them in their task of proclaiming Jesus Christ in Asia today. I am confident that the deliberations of the Congress will stress that the Christian life and calling must be seen first and foremost as a source of sublime happiness and a gift to be shared with others. Every Catholic should be able to say, with the Apostle Paul, "For me, to live is Christ" (Phil 1:21). Those who have found in Jesus the truth, joy and beauty which give meaning and direction to their lives will naturally desire to bring this grace to others. Undaunted by the presence of difficulties, or the enormity of the task at hand, they will trust in the mysterious presence of the Holy Spirit who is always at work in the hearts of individuals, in their traditions and cultures, mysteriously opening doors to Christ as "the way, and the truth and the life" (Jn 14:6), and the fulfilment of every human aspiration.
With these sentiments, I invoke upon all taking part in the Congress a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit and I willingly join in the prayer which will accompany these days of study and discernment. May the Church in Asia bear ever more fervent witness to the incomparable beauty of being a Christian, and proclaim Jesus Christ as the one Savior of the world. Commending those present to the loving intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church, I cordially impart my Apostolic Blessing as a pledge of joy and peace in the Lord.

L’UDIENZA GENERALE
L’Udienza Generale di questa mattina si è svolta alle ore 10.30 sulla Piazza antistante il Palazzo Apostolico di Castel Gandolfo dove il Santo Padre ha incontrato gruppi di pellegrini e fedeli giunti dall’Italia e da ogni parte del mondo.
Nel discorso in lingua italiana, il Papa si è soffermato sulla figura di Santa Ildegarda di Bingen. Quindi ha rivolto un saluto in varie lingue ai gruppi di fedeli presenti. L’Udienza si è conclusa con la Benedizione Apostolica impartita dal Santo Padre.
CATECHESI DEL SANTO PADRE IN LINGUA ITALIANA
Cari fratelli e sorelle,
nel 1988, in occasione dell’Anno Mariano, il Venerabile Giovanni Paolo II ha scritto una Lettera Apostolica intitolata Mulieris dignitatem, trattando del ruolo prezioso che le donne hanno svolto e svolgono nella vita della Chiesa. "La Chiesa - vi si legge - ringrazia per tutte le manifestazioni del genio femminile apparse nel corso della storia, in mezzo a tutti i popoli e a tutte le nazioni; ringrazia per tutti i carismi che lo Spirito Santo elargisce alle donne nella storia del popolo di Dio, per tutte le vittorie che essa deve alla loro fede, speranza e carità; ringrazia per tutti i frutti di santità femminile" (n. 31).
Anche in quei secoli della storia che noi abitualmente chiamiamo Medioevo, diverse figure femminili spiccano per la santità della vita e la ricchezza dell’insegnamento. Oggi vorrei iniziare a presentarvi una di esse: santa Ildegarda di Bingen, vissuta in Germania nel XII secolo. Nacque nel 1098 in Renania, a Bermersheim, nei pressi di Alzey, e morì nel 1179, all’età di 81 anni, nonostante la permanente fragilità della sua salute. Ildegarda apparteneva a una famiglia nobile e numerosa e, fin dalla nascita, venne votata dai suoi genitori al servizio di Dio. A otto anni, per ricevere un’adeguata formazione umana e cristiana, fu affidata alle cure della maestra Giuditta di Spanheim, che si era ritirata in clausura presso il monastero benedettino di san Disibodo. Si andò formando un piccolo monastero femminile di clausura, che seguiva la Regola di san Benedetto. Ildegarda ricevette il velo dal Vescovo Ottone di Bamberga e, nel 1136, alla morte di madre Giuditta, divenuta Superiora della comunità, le consorelle la chiamarono a succederle. Svolse questo compito mettendo a frutto le sue doti di donna colta, spiritualmente elevata e capace di affrontare con competenza gli aspetti organizzativi della vita claustrale. Qualche anno dopo, anche a motivo del numero crescente di giovani donne che bussavano alle porte del monastero, Ildegarda fondò un’altra comunità a Bingen, intitolata a san Ruperto, dove trascorse il resto della vita. Lo stile con cui esercitava il ministero dell’autorità è esemplare per ogni comunità religiosa: esso suscitava una santa emulazione nella pratica del bene, tanto che, come risulta da testimonianze del tempo, la madre e le figlie gareggiavano nello stimarsi e nel servirsi a vicenda.
Già negli anni in cui era superiora del monastero di san Disibodo, Ildegarda aveva iniziato a dettare le visioni mistiche, che riceveva da tempo, al suo consigliere spirituale, il monaco Volmar, e alla sua segretaria, una consorella a cui era molto affezionata, Richardis di Strade. Come sempre accade nella vita dei veri mistici, anche Ildegarda volle sottomettersi all’autorità di persone sapienti per discernere l’origine delle sue visioni, temendo che esse fossero frutto di illusioni e che non venissero da Dio. Si rivolse perciò alla persona che ai suoi tempi godeva della massima stima nella Chiesa: san Bernardo di Chiaravalle, del quale ho già parlato in alcune Catechesi. Questi tranquillizzò e incoraggiò Ildegarda. Ma nel 1147 ella ricevette un’altra approvazione importantissima. Il Papa Eugenio III, che presiedeva un sinodo a Treviri, lesse un testo dettato da Ildegarda, presentatogli dall’Arcivescovo Enrico di Magonza. Il Papa autorizzò la mistica a scrivere le sue visioni e a parlare in pubblico. Da quel momento il prestigio spirituale di Ildegarda crebbe sempre di più, tanto che i contemporanei le attribuirono il titolo di "profetessa teutonica". È questo, cari amici, il sigillo di un’esperienza autentica dello Spirito Santo, sorgente di ogni carisma: la persona depositaria di doni soprannaturali non se ne vanta mai, non li ostenta e, soprattutto, mostra totale obbedienza all’autorità ecclesiale. Ogni dono distribuito dallo Spirito Santo, infatti, è destinato all’edificazione della Chiesa, e la Chiesa, attraverso i suoi Pastori, ne riconosce l’autenticità.
Parlerò ancora una volta il prossimo mercoledì su questa grande donna "profetessa", che parla con grande attualità anche oggi a noi, con la sua coraggiosa capacità di discernere i segni dei tempi, con il suo amore per il creato, la sua medicina, la sua poesia, la sua musica, che oggi viene ricostruita, il suo amore per Cristo e per la Sua Chiesa, sofferente anche in quel tempo, ferita anche in quel tempo dai peccati dei preti e dei laici, e tanto più amata come corpo di Cristo. Così santa Ildegarda parla a noi; ne parleremo ancora il prossimo mercoledì. Grazie per la vostra attenzione.

Vous découvrirez alors les dons que le Seigneur vous fait pour le service de l’Église et du monde entier. Bon pèlerinage à tous et bonne rentrée à ceux qui vont reprendre leur travail ou le chemin des études. Je pense particulièrement aux enfants et aux jeunes.
I greet the English-speaking pilgrims, especially those from Scotland, Ireland, Denmark, Japan and Sri Lanka. Our catechesis today deals with Saint Hildegard of Bingen, the great nun and mystic of the twelfth century. One of the outstanding women of the Middle Ages, Hildegard used her spiritual gifts for the renewal of the Church and the spread of authentic Christian living. Hildegard reminds us of the contribution which women are called to make to the life of the Church in our own time. Trusting in her intercession, I cordially invoke upon all of you God’s abundant blessings!

In der heutigen Katechese habe ich eben über eine der großen deutschen Frauen, die heilige Hildegard von Bingen, gesprochen, die nicht nur eine große Mystikerin war, sondern auch Ratgeberin von Bischöfen und Fürsten, weil sie die Zeichen der Zeit zu deuten vermochte. Sie scheute sich nicht, die Bischöfe und die Fürsten zu einem ernsthaften Leben in der Nachfolge Christi zu ermahnen. Auch wir wollen uns immer neu prüfen, ob unser Leben vor Gottes Angesicht Bestand hat. Der Herr segne euch alle und schenke euch eine gute Zeit in Rom.

El encuentro, organizado por la Sección de Juventud del Consejo Episcopal Latinoamericano, se desarrollará bajo el lema: "Caminemos con Jesús para dar Vida a nuestros pueblos".
A todos los presentes en esa significativa iniciativa, los invito a poner sus ojos en Jesucristo, el Hijo de Dios vivo. Con su gracia, hallaréis la fuerza que impulsa a comprometerse con las causas que dignifican al hombre y hacen grandes a los pueblos.
Queridos jóvenes, que estos días de convivencia, oración y estudio os sirvan para encontraros personalmente con el Señor y escuchar su Palabra. No quedaréis defraudados, pues Él tiene para todos designios de amor y salvación. El Papa está a vuestro lado y os reitera su confianza, a la vez que pide a Dios que os asista para que, siendo auténticos discípulos de Jesucristo, viváis los valores del Evangelio, los transmitáis con valentía a los que os rodean y os inspiréis en ellos para construir un mundo más justo y reconciliado. Vale la pena entregarse a esta hermosa misión.
Que la Virgen María os acompañe en vuestro caminar y os recuerde siempre que no hay mayor felicidad que ser amigo de Cristo. Que os sea también de ayuda la Bendición Apostólica que os imparto con afecto. Muchas gracias.
