Feb. 1
- Message from the Holy Father to the II Continental Congress on Vocations of the Episcopal Council of Latin America and the Caribbean in Costa Rica.

- The Vatican announces that the Holy Father will personally preside at the ordination on Saturday, Feb. 5, of five new recently names Curial archbishops - three are secretaries in their respective congregations, and two are Apostolic Nuncios.

- Islamic demonstrators in Lahore, Pakistan, burn the Pope in effigy, along with effigies of the Catholic Minister for Religious Minorities.

Feb. 2
- General Audience. With a catechesis on St. Teresa of Avila, the Holy Father begins a catechetical cycle to complete his presentation of the Doctors of the Church - there are 34 so far, and he had spoken of the first 26 in his chronological presentation of the great figures of the Church from the Apostles onwards. After Teresa of Avila, he will have seven more to go (down to St. Therese of Lisieux, the last saint to have been proclaimed a DOC).

- During the GA, a boy slips through the security barrier and walks up to the Pope onstage. Very sweet episode.

- Vespers on the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple and the XV World Day for the Consecrated Life. In his homily, the Pope cites the icons associated with the Presentation and links them to the vocation to consecrated life.

- The German service of Vatican Radio reports a letter from Mons. Gaenswein to a Munich doctor asking him to desist from using the Pope misleadingly to encourage organ donation, because the organ donation card held by then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger became invalid when he was elected Pope. The Church requires that the remains of Popes should remain intact.

Feb. 3
- The Pope receives a new ambassador from Austria, and addresses the Emmanuel Community on mission and the Eucharist.

- At a news conference to discuss the Pope's message for the coming World Day for the Sick on February 11, Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Vatican Council for the Pastoral Ministry to Healthcare Workers announces it will hold an international conference on AIDS in May and publish guidelines for all Catholic institutions and workers involved in the care of AIDS patients.

- The Vatican publicizes YOUCAT, a 300-page Youth Catechism specially prepared for WYD 2011 in Madrid, with a Foreword by the Holy Father. It will be published in the Vatican's seven official languages and be given to each participant in Madrid. YOUCAT is based on the 1992 Catechism of the Catholic Church prepared and published by the CDF under Cardinal Ratzinger.

- The Vatican announces a new phase (the third) of the ecumenical dialog held through ARCIC (Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission). The first meeting will take place in the Italian monastery of Bose next May.

- Last of 3 seminars on Benedict XVI's great secular discourses at the Lateran Apostolic Palace. Topic: His address at Westminster Hall to the civilian society of the United Kingdom.

Feb. 4
- The Holy Father addresses the plenary session of the Apostolic Signatura's Supreme Tribunal.

- The Vatican announces that the Lenten spiritual exercises this year for the Holy Father and the Roman Curia will take place on March 13-19. Fr. François-Marie Léthel, of the Discalced Carmelites, Prelate-Secretary of the Pontifical Academy of Theology, will guide the meditations, whose theme will be: "The light of Christ in the heart of the Church: John Paul II and the theology of the saints".

- German media report a letter signed by 120 theology professors from the German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) seeking the entire laundry list of 'reforms' advocated by Catholic activist dissidents in the past 40 years, starting with the abolition of the requirement for priestly celibacy.

Feb. 5
- The Holy Father presides at the episcopal ordination of five new Curial nominees (three secretaries of dicasteries and two Apostolic Nuncios) with the rank of Archbishop. Another great and memorable homily on the role of bishops, which also stresses the significance for the Church of the apostolic succession.

Feb. 6
- At the Sunday Angelus, the Holy Father acknowledges the annual Day for Life observed by the Church in Italy.

Feb. 7
- The Holy Father addresses the plenary session of the Congregation for Catholic education.
- In central Indonesia, Muslim mobs Born three Catholic churches and two other Catholic-run institutions to protest a five-year sentence given to a man accused of blasphemy for distributing missionary materials. The demonstrators demanded the death penalty instead.

Feb. 8
- Cardinal Kasper says the 1879 letter signed by him and eight other German theologians, including Joseph Ratzinger, did not recommend abolition of priestly celibacy, only that the German bishops should open the subject for discussion. He adds that the letter has long since become academic since there have been endless discussions on the issue since then, and the Church has firmly re-stated its position through the Popes and various Synods.

Feb. 9
- Andrea Tornielli anticipates a Motu Proprio in which Benedict XVI will authorize the Congregation for Divine Worship to carry out measures that will do away with liturgical abuses and instill greater reverence at Mass.

- The WYD Secretariat in Madrid releases the program for the Holy Father's visit on August 18-21. It does not yet include any meetings he will have with Spanish officials.

- The Vatican points out that a new Iphone application providing a guide to confession is no substitute for actual confession to a priest.

Feb. 10
- The Holy Father accepts the resignation of 77-year-old Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, Major Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, for health reasons.

- The Vatican releases the text of the Holy Father's message for the World Day of Prayer for Vocations in May.

- The dioceses of northeast Italy release the program for the Holy Father's visit to Aquileia and Venice in May.

Feb. 11
- The Vatican marks the annual anniversary of the 1929 Lateran Pacts which established the sovereignty of the Vatican.

Feb. 12
- The Vatican observes the 80th anniversary of Vatican Radio.

- The Holy Father addresses the Priestly Fraternity of the Missionaries of San Carlo Borromeo on the 25th anniversary of their founding.

- Pope Benedict's contemporary Court of the Gentiles is launched at the world's oldest university in Bologna, as a prelude to the international launch with multiple events to be held in Paris on March 24 and 25.
