ST. CARLO BORROMEO (Italy, 1538-1584)
Cardinal, Archbishop of Milan, Church Reformer
Nephew of Pope Pius IV, he was named cardinal
when he was only 22, but his abilities were
evident, and he set about to carry out Church
reforms at the start of the Counter-Reformation.
Active in the Council of Trent, he was responsible
for much of the Tridentine Catechism. He served
the poor directly during a plague and died young.
He was canonized in 1610.

embodied by St. Bernard of Clairvaux and the scholastic monk Abelard.
